Learning to outline rectangles paves the way to create other photo effects, such as borders and geometric designs. Photoshop provides two ways to create an outlined rectangle in any color or thickness. One option is to use the Rectangle tool and draw a vector shape. The other method involves using the Rectangular Marquee tool and stroking it with color.
Create a Rectangle Outline Using the Shape Tool
Select the Rectangle tool from the Tool’s panel. It is the last tool in the third set of tools in the panel. If the Rectangle tool is not visible, click and hold on the current shape to reveal the tools hidden underneath.
Go to the options bar and click on the “Style” arrow.
Select the “One Pixel Stroke, Zero Percent Fill Opacity” style.

You can give your art projects some extra punch by learning how to outline text in Photoshop, no matter which platform you use. Adobe hasn't changed the basic methods for outlining text since Photoshop CS6 released in 2012, so unless you're using a very old version, the following steps will show you how to make some great Photoshop borders for your text.
How to make an outline around your text
With a monthly subscription (or free trial) for Photoshop CC you get all of the software's most powerful features. Whether you're using the latest version or one from a few years prior though, the simplest method for outlining text should work the same.
These instructions are for Windows users, but if you're using MacOS, the only difference is a right-click should be a CMD+Click instead.
- Choose the Type tool from the left-hand menu.
- Write the text you want to outline.
- Use the layers window to select the text layer you're editing.
Make sure it's selected under the Windows tab at the top of the screen if it's not visible.
- Either right-click the layer and select Blending Options followed by Stroke, from the left-hand menu, or select the FX button at the bottom of the Layers window, followed by Stroke from the pop-up menu.
- Use the on-screen options to configure how your outline will look. Size controls the thickness of the outline (stroke), while Position designates whether it will be inside or outside the text. Feel free to play around with the options. If you do something you don't like, select Cancel and start again.
- When you're happy with how the text looks, select the OK button.
Outline Text to Make it More Exciting
Using the Stroke effect in layers is useful, but it's linked directly to that layer and therefore harder to edit by itself.
To make an outline that's a bit more exciting, you want to outline the text on its own layer.
- Use the Type tool to create the text you want to outline.
- Select the Text layer from the Layers window and right-click it. Select Rasterize Type.
- Hold Ctrl (CMD in macOS) and select the Type layer thumbnail to select all of the text.
- Create a new layer using the Layers window. Select Edit from the top toolbar, then select Stroke.
- Choose the pixel width of your intended outline, then select OK.
Now that you have an outline on a layer separate from your main text, you can adjust its own effects at will. Add an additional stroke outline to it using the first method outlined above, bevel or emboss it, or remove the original type layer entirely for outline-only text.

Outlining a drawing in Adobe Photoshop is a method commonly used to transform digital photos into line art. The process relies on the creation of paths surrounding the areas you wish to outline. With paths, you can closely select the position of the outline before applying the brushstroke that creates the actual line around the object. With Photoshop layers, you can create the paths in a way that isolates them from your actual image, allowing you to save the drawing in its own file without affecting the original photo.

Open the Layers Panel
Click on the “Window” menu in the main menu at the top of the application and select “Layers” to open the Layers panel, if it isn't already open.
Duplicate the Layer
Press “Ctrl-J” to duplicate the original layer. The layers in the panel are named 'Background' and 'Layer 1.' Double-click on the 'Background' name in the Layer panel to highlight the existing name. Type “Original” to rename the layer. Rename Layer 1 “Top” to differentiate the various layers used to create the drawing.
Rename the Layers
Press “Ctrl-Shift-N” and 'OK' twice to create two new layers. Drag the new layers beneath the “Top” layer with the mouse. Rename the first new layer “Background” and the other new layer “Outline.”

Create a Path Around the Image
Click on the 'Pen' tool in the toolbar. Select the “Paths” icon for the pen in the options bar at the top of the application. Use this tool to create a path around the image by selecting points along the image contours that the pen line follows, outlining the object.
Create a Curved Line
Click on the edge of the image at the beginning of an image curve. Move the pen to the end of that curve and click on the edge of the image again. A line appears that follows the path between the two points. Curve the line by holding down the mouse button and dragging it to the left or right to produce a curved line. Adjust the line by moving the mouse until it matches the curve of the object. Follow the item with the pen, clicking at the end of each curve. The smaller the curve selection, the more closely the pen follows the outline. You’ll see the path as you proceed.
Outline to Contours
Follow the contours of the item until you return to the starting point. Click on the starting point to complete the outline.
Select Your Brush
Right-click on the path and select “Stroke Path.” Choose the 'Brush' option to select your predefined brush for use in creating the outline. Click the 'OK' button to apply the brush stroke along your marked path.
Remove the Path
Click the 'Eye' icon next to the Background layer. Right-click on the path line and select on “Delete Path” to remove the path, leaving only the line drawn with the Stroke Path command. Check that the line appears as desired. If it doesn’t, erase it using the Eraser tool from the toolbar and try again. If the outline is successful, hide the background layer again with the Eye icon.
Continue Outlining the Other Sections
Continue outlining other sections of the outline by repeating Steps 9 through 12 until the drawing is complete. Vary the width of the strokes on your work, if desired.
Hide all but the Outline Layer
Hide all but the Outline layer to see only your drawing. Save the file to preserve the original photo and the layers. Delete the other layers and save the drawing as a separate file using the “File” and “Save As” options to keep only the outline of the image as a separate file.
